Suffixes – Part 1

Suffixes come at the end of words. They help you to understand the meaning of a new word. Here are some common suffixes.

Suffixe stehen am Ende von Wörtern. Sie helfen dir, die Bedeutung eines neuen Wortes zu verstehen. Hier sind einige häufige Suffixe.

Suffix Bedeutung Beispiele
er, or (noun) Person work – worker,
swim – swimmer,
instruct – instructor
er, or (noun) Maschine, Sache cook – cooker,
calculate – calculator
ful (adjective) voll use – useful,
beauty – beautiful
less (adjective) ohne use – useless,
end – endless
ly macht ein Adverb aus einem Adjektiv quick – quickly,
happy – happily
ness macht aus einem Adjektiv ein abstraktes Substantiv happy – happiness,
sad – sadness
y macht aus einem Substantiv ein Adjektiv sand – sandy,
sun – sunny

Examples:

He’s a hard worker. He works 12 hours a day. – Er ist ein harter Arbeiter. Er arbeitet 12 Stunden am Tag.
She’s a very good swimmer. She was in the Olympic team. – Sie ist eine sehr gute Schwimmerin. Sie war in der Olympiamannschaft.
Her tennis is much better now that she has a new instructor. – Ihr Tennis ist viel besser geworden, seit sie einen neuen Lehrer hat.
We’ve got a new gas cooker so the food should be delicious! – Wir haben einen neuen Gasherd, also sollte das Essen köstlich sein!
